In limited release in four relatively small New York and Los Angeles art houses, the critically praised drama In the Bedroom opened strongly, earning $95,000 between Friday and Sunday.

Continuing to perform astonishingly well was the French film Amélie, which took in $2.3 million at just 217 theaters over the five days.

Edward Burns' Sidewalks of New York, which opened to mixed reviews a week ago, widened its release to 99 theaters, where it generated about $713,000.
