The show itself was not heavily hyped, but the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring drew considerable attention, winning the American Film Institute (AFI) award for best picture.

CBS' Saturday-night broadcast of the first annual award show honored many of the film industry's best--not just Lord of the Rings.

Other winners were Denzel Washington for best actor in Training Day, Sissy Spacek as best actress in the tense drama In the Bedroom and Robert Altman as best director for his film Gosford Park.

The show was held at the upscale Beverly Hills Hotel.
