Actor/Director Billy Bob Thornton (Monster's Ball, All the Pretty Horses) is returning to his roots--his musical roots, that is.

Thornton, who once earned his living as a drummer, will launch an eight-city U.S. tour to promote his recently released album Private Radio, in addition to a few new songs from an upcoming record, Reuters reports.

Private Radio was given mixed reviews at its release last fall, but Rolling Stone magazine gave it four stars, calling it a "pleasing Southern Gothic exploration [with] mid-tempo twang...and dark balladry."

In a statement, Thornton describes the music he co-wrote with producer Marty Stuart as "incredibly personal," adding that "an intimate setting" would be the best place for the audience to "really feel the emotion" in the songs.

The series of concert-hall performances begins May 17 at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles.
