In an interview from Orlando, Fla., with Newsweek magazine, Combs admits his relationship with Lopez was under stress before his March 2001 trial on gun charges but said the news was still unexpected. "Yeah, I was surprised. I mean, I didn't know it was coming, but if getting married made her happy, then I'm happy she's married."
Combs, 32, was arrested after he and Lopez fled a New York nightclub amidst gunfire the morning of Dec. 27, 1999. He was charged with illegal possession of a weapon and bribery after offering his driver $50,000 to say the gun was his own, but Combs was later acquitted of those charges.
"There were problems in the relationship before the trial. Then, during the trial, we had to be apart a lot, which made it so easy to stray," he told the magazine. "I couldn't be at her door with flowers and cards. A relationship needs that, or someone else will step in."
Lopez married dancer and choreographer Cris Judd at a very hush-hush ceremony in Calabasas, Calif., last September.
