To the top of Forbes magazine's latest Celebrity 100 list.
The mag's 2002 list, which includes entertainers and athletes who have earned the most in the past year, is topped by pop princess Britney Spears.
Among the many touchstones of ephemeral fame, three elements--earning power, media mentions and Web buzz--set the measure of celebrity status. According to the list, which was released Thursday, Spears has it all.
"This year's champ: Britney Spears. She doesn't have Steven Spielberg's pull but, in the last year, she arguably had a bigger impact on pop culture," Forbes said in its July 8 issue.
Indeed. The 20-year-old Louisiana native has three multiplatinum albums to her credit and recently made her feature film debut with Crossroads. Spears also opened up an eatery in New York City called Nyla.
Spears, however, was outranked by George Lucas in terms of moneymaking power. The Star Wars director led the pack on the separate list of top earners, having made $200 million during the last 12 months.
But what Spears lacked in the breadwinning department, ranking 25th with estimated earnings of $39.2 million, she made up for in terms of media coverage, television and radio appearances, magazine covers and, most of all, Web hits. Spears was 2001's most searched-for personality at AOL, Ask Jeeves, Lycos and Yahoo!.
The July 8 issue of Forbes magazine hits newsstands Monday.
