The Goldeneye star boosted awareness of the campaign by agreeing to become patron of the dilapidated Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy, the town where he was born.

Now with his support the venue has been awarded an $800,000 (£500,000) lottery grant, pushing funds past the $2.8 million (£1.8 million) target. Renovation work will start in April (12), with plans for the cinema to reopen next year (13) - 30 years after it closed down.

Charlotte Flower, chairwoman of Friends of Birks Cinema, says, "Alan was born in Aberfeldy and we are delighted that he's chosen to be connected to a venture that will bring so much enjoyment to the next generation of Aberfeldy's children, not to mention the adults."

Actress Emma Thompson also supported the campaign by donating a drawing to a fundraising auction last year (11).
