Corey Brooks of New Beginnings Baptist Church has spent almost 100 days living in a tent on the roof of a building directly opposite the Southside motel, which has become a retreat for hookers and drug dealers.

As well as warning people to steer clear of the building, the pastor insists he'll stay on the roof until he raises the $450,000 (£281,000) he requires to demolish the building.

Brooks recently appeared on a national news show and explained, "We’re living in a place where you can just be walking to the store, going to get something for your kids and you can be shot and killed.”

Good Deeds star Perry heard about the drama and, touched by the pastor's dedication, he dug deep to help boost his campaign - to the tune of $98,000 (£61,000).

Thrilled Brooks says, "I said I wasn’t going to cry... I’m so grateful for every gift."
