The picture, which stars Watson, Paul Rudd and Logan Lerman in the tale of a troubled high school student, was initially rated 'R' by censors at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), due to its depiction of teenage drug and alcohol use.

The rating meant kids under 17 would have to be accompanied by an adult and executives at Summit Entertainment, the production company behind the film, appealed against the decision.

Bosses at the MPAA have now caved in and given the film a PG-13 rating, which urges caution for pre-teens.

A statement from the MPAA reads, "(The film has been rated PG-13) on appeal for mature thematic material, drug and alcohol use, sexual content including references, and a fight - all involving teens."
