The movie star opened his breaking heart to men's magazine GQ just days after Aniston filed for divorce in March.
In the interview, Pitt says of the break-up, "It's so complex and multifaceted. We've done it our way and I love her for that. We've kept the love we have for each other."
The movie hunk refused to confirm or deny a romance with Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star Angelina Jolie, but he was optimistic about his divorce and philosophical about the break-up of his marriage.
He adds, "The thing that I don't understand is looking at this as a failure. It's talked about like it failed, I guess because it wasn't flawless.
"I embrace the messiness of life. I find it so beautiful, actually. The idea that marriage has to be for all time, that I don't understand."
The actor also admits he wanted to "punch" out the "lights" of journalists who wrote "cruel" things about the split couple just to "get a rise out of her (Aniston)".
