A "work print" of the sci-fi film was circulated May 19 on an internet file-sharing network where more than 16,000 people began downloading it.
An early version of Revenge of the Sith, before final post-production work had taken place, the pirated copy contains a time code.
Director George Lucas' company Lucasfilm declined to comment on the security breach.
Following yesterday's international release, Revenge of the Sith now holds the record for the widest simultaneous film release of all time.
