"Bewitched" Statue Battle

May 25, 2005 | 9:43am EDT

A planned statue tribute to beloved TV sitcom Bewitched is causing broomsticks to battle in Salem, Massachusetts because residents fear the proposed site is too close to the town's less comical magic connection--the Salem Witch Trials.

Bewitched character Samantha Stevens, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, was to be immortalized in bronze to honor her connection to Salem, where the TV show was set in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

But locals are upset because the comical witch will overlook the town not far from where 20 Salemites were wrongfully accused of witchcraft and put to death in 1692.

Opposition leader Jean Harrison says, "To put the statue in this particular location is insensitive... It trivializes the witch trials that took place here."

Last week Salem officials green-lighted the statue plan, but angry locals who oppose the memorial insist they'll fight to at least have it moved to a different location.

The statue tribute is particularly topical as Nicole Kidman is set to recreate Montgomery's role in the much-anticipated Bewitched movie this summer.
