Mohammed Bouyeri has already admitted to shooting and stabbing the director last year and has waived the right to a defense. Authorities, who have controversially closed the trial to the public, fear racial repercussions.
Muslim scholar Bouyeri faces life imprisonment. He was allegedly angered by Van Gogh's anti-Islam film Submission, which featured scenes of an actress with script from holy book the Koran written across her naked body.
The footage upset many Muslims, who sent death threats to Van Gogh and the film's screenwriter Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a prominent politician.
Ali is still under police protection following Van Gogh's murder.
