Oceanside police officials are investigating the case as a possible suicide, following reports of a shooting incident inside Seau's property on Wednesday (02May12).
Seau was a University of Southern California star who played professionally with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. He was honoured with 12 Pro-Bowl selections during his 20-year career.
He was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) off a cliff in Carlsbad, California following an arrest for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau insisted he was not trying to kill himself, but had fallen asleep at the wheel.
The 43 year old leaves behind three kids and an ex-wife.
Seau's body was discovered by his girlfriend on Wednesday (02May12).
In a lunchtime press conference, the sportsman's devastated mother Luisa said, "I don't understand who would do this to my son but I pray to God, 'Please take me... Leave my son,' but it's too late."
A statement from the Chargers, where Seau played the bulk of his professional football, reads, "Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now. We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family."
