Superhero epic The Avengers has scored big at the U.S. box office - the film grossed $18.7 million (£11.7 million) in midnight screenings on Friday (04May12). The huge figure makes it Hollywood's eighth biggest midnight opener in movie history, behind the Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games franchises.
