SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 20, 2000 - This pro-wrestling thing never ends. "The Mummy" As if it weren't bad (good?) enough that the walking, talking thyroid cases we call pro wrestlers dominate cable ratings, if not the thoughts of our young ones, now one of their leaders is coming to the movies.
The Rock, last seen hosting Saturday's edition of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, is in talks to play the baddie in the planned sequel to 1999 box-office hit "The Mummy."
Trade-paper reports today say Mr. Rock (er, Dwayne Johnson) will play a half-man, half-scorpion, as opposed to the half-man, half-beast thing he does most of the time.
For the uninitiated, The Rock is a fine fellow known to entertain men, women and children with his battle cry: "Do you smell what The Rock's cooking?"
PIANO MAN: Writer/director Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff") is set to call the shots on a biopic about Liberace, the legendary entertainer you've heard about from your mother. For the uninitiated, Liberace was a fine fellow and Vegas showman known to entertain moms and grandmas by tickling the ivories. He died in 1987 at age 67.
INSERT WITTY PHRASE HERE: Martin Lawrence is set to star in "Untitled Martin Lawrence Action Comedy," described as a "Ghostbusters" meets "Clash of the Titans" romp in today's Daily Variety. Presumably, the thing will have a different title when it opens.
