JOHN GIELGUD: 1904-2000 John Gielgud HOLLYWOOD, May 22, 2000 -- Distinguished veteran British actor John Gielgud, who won a 1981 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing proper butler to a sauced millionaire in the Dudley Moore comedy "Arthur," has died, his family said today. He was 96.
Gielgud died at his London-area home. The cause of death was not disclosed, but he was, like we said, 96. A theater legend, his TV and film career boasted 130 credits, including stops in: Laurence Olivier's "Hamlet" (1948), Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet" (1996) and "Arthur 2: On the Rocks" (1988).
