The celebrated author and playwright passed away at his home in Los Angeles after suffering complications from pneumonia.

His Broadway production The Best Man was nominated for a slew of Tony Awards after its 1960 debut, and its current revival, starring Davis, James Earl Jones, Cybill Shepherd and John Stamos, is thrilling New York audiences.

Sex and the City star Davis was stunned by the news of Vidal's death, and she has vowed to make her performance in Wednesday's show extra special in his honour.

In a post on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "Rest in peace our brilliant writer - so sad to loose (sic) him. We will relish his words today in TheBestManBway."

Whoopi Goldberg has also added her own tribute, declaring, "Gore Vidal 1 of the smartest, wittiest minds has left us. Read him if you haven't see his play... (sic)".
