The Alfie star lives in a multi-million dollar house in Highgate, a leafy residential area in the north of the British capital, and last year (11) he applied to local authorities for permission to make a series of improvements.

The actor, who filed the paperwork under his real name David Law, submitted plans to extend his basement and he moved to halt any possible objections from locals by inviting his neighbours over to the house to see his proposal first-hand.

Neighbour Michael Hammerson, 68, a member of the Highgate Society, tells Britain's Evening Standard newspaper, "We have a serious ongoing problem with houses in this area getting these massive basements and when we objected to his, we got an invitation from his PA to come to his house and look over what he was doing.

"He came across as a nice, intelligent chap and seemed like a normal member of our community. He was dressed in a tracksuit and was very relaxed with us.

"He explained that the basement he was proposing was really very small and the only comments any of us made were about the windows at the back of the house which perhaps could have a more authentic design, given the fact that it is a listed building."

Officials at Camden Council have now given the star permission to go ahead with the building work.
