Guitarist Eddie Van Halen, leader of the veteran rock band Van Halen, has confirmed that he's battling cancer, according to a statement posted Thursday on the group's Web site. According to Reuters, the 46-year-old musician, a smoker and a former alcoholic, said he was told he was healthier than ever after being examined by three oncologists and neck surgeons. "Although it's hard to say when, there's a good chance I will be cancer-free in the near future," Van Halen said. In May, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center released a statement announcing that Van Halen would begin an outpatient clinical trial to in cancer prevention. Van Halen did not specify where the cancer was located, although unconfirmed reports have mentioned his tongue.
