Bootleg copies of The Mummy Returns could be downloaded from the Internet five days before the film premiered last week, and copies of Pearl Harbor, which hasn't yet opened, are already available on line, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday. The newspaper said that at least 350,000 illegal copies of features are currently available on the Internet and that they are being downloaded at the rate of 450,000 to 580,000 per day. Most, it noted, use the DivX technology. A spokesman for the MPAA, which has begun asking Internet service providers to cut off subscribers who make films available illegally online, said: "The assumption that it's not a major problem yet is an incorrect one."
