She was in hospital when filmmakers Tom Tykwer and Andy and Lana Wachowski asked for a meeting with the Oscar winner - and Berry admits she feared the worst.
She tells WENN, "It was a real bummer for everybody involved. I felt like such an idiot because I was being carried around by this guy. It was so physical, what I had to do, I thought there's no way I'm going to be able to do this, and I thought I was going to be recast. I sat in my bed, foot up in the air.
"I got a call saying that Tom, Andy and Lana wanted to come and talk to me and I thought they were going to give me my walking papers and say, 'Love you but we're bringing in Angela Bassett or somebody!' I thought, 'I'll be gracious and take it,' but they came in and said they really wanted me to stay and work this out.
"They said, '(Co-star) Tom (Hanks) wants you too.' He had to go back and shoot in Majorca (Spain) when we were supposed to be done. It was a big shift and everybody sort of rallied around. With a lot of tape and wrapping around my foot, I found ways to grin and bear it and get through it."
