The Oscar and Grammy-winning writer has teamed up with composer Stuart Brayson to make a stage adaptation of the 1951 novel From Here to Eternity, which was also turned into a hit film starring Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr.
The story follows the love affairs of American soldiers stationed in Hawaii before the Pearl Harbor attacks.
Sir Tim admitted earlier this year (12) he was so excited about the project, it had tempted him out of his decade-long hiatus.
He told Britain's Daily Telegraph, "To be brutally honest, there wasn't a topic I was desperately enthusiastic about, and I'd rather do nothing than write something which I hadn't really got my heart in. But this is great - these two love stories unfolding with the threat of war hovering, in the wonderful setting of Hawaii, which is part incredibly beautiful and glamorous, and part very basic and stark with the barracks, and these guys cooped up and occasionally delving into the fleshpots of Honolulu."
From Here to Eternity will open at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the British capital in September 2013.
