Juan Antonio Bayona's drama, which chronicles a real-life family's struggles during the tsunami which lashed the coast of Thailand over Christmas in 2004, is set become the highest-grossing release for a Spanish film.
The feat will topple 2001 movie The Others, which grossed $35.5 million (£22.2 million) domestically, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Impossible opened in Spain on 11 October (12) and has already racked up $35.4 million (£22.1 million) at the box office.
Although The Impossible, like The Others, is an English-language film, it qualifies as a Spanish movie because the director and producers are Spanish.
