Minority groups: networks only give lip service to diversity

May 25, 2001 | 1:11pm EDT

A coalition of minority groups Thursday is expected to issue a "report card" on the TV networks' efforts to increase ethnic diversity in front of and behind the cameras, with every network except NBC being criticized sharply for their failure to make good on promises to diversify. ABC is expected to be singled out for special criticism. On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported that John Rose, ABC's head of diversity, had complained that he was not involved in the development or casting of any new show, had still not been shown pilots for next fall's series and was uncertain how many minorities would appear on them. The Times said that none of ABC's new shows will feature a minority in a starring or prominent role.
