"Pearl Harbor" bombed by critics

The box office for Pearl Harbor could be hard hit by a massive attack from critics. An early bombing raid has already begun, with AP critic David German calling the film "three hours of dreck ... a dumb, soulless behemoth that delivers the cinematic equivalent of shell shock." Time magazine's Richard Schickel wrote that the film adds up to "total inconsequence." Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com commented that the release of the film poses the question "Is the new generation of moviegoers so used to lower standards of filmmaking that they will flock to a vacuous, overgrown video game? ... It's a nearly three-hour video collage of every awful cliché you can think of -- and some that were certainly forgotten." (A digest of other reviews will be included in Friday's edition of Studio Briefing.)
