The pop star will take the leading role of a spoiled rich woman who goes on a holiday vacation with friends in the Mediterranean and ends up falling in love with a communist sailor, the trade paper said.
Ritchie previously directed Madonna in her latest music video "What It Feels Like for a Girl," which was rejected by MTV because of its violent content. The two have also worked together on the BMWFilms.com short film Star.
Swept Away, based on Lina Wertmuller's 1975 Italian-language movie, will mark Ritchie's third feature and a dramatic departure from his previous mob dramas. The movie is tentatively scheduled to begin shooting in the fall.
In related news, Madonna, who is currently on the United States leg of her Drowned World Tour, has postponed her Monday, Aug. 6 concert at Boston's FleetCenter by one day due to "logistical issues," a statement on her official site, madonnamusic.com, reads.
Tickets for the previously scheduled performance will be honored at the door on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Those who want refunds for their tickets can do so at the point of purchase until Aug. 6.
Madonna's Wednesday, Aug. 8 performance in Boston will go as scheduled.
