Thai royalty backs epic

Aug 10, 2001 | 1:39pm EDT

Thailand is going all-out to promote and market a feature based on the heroic effort of the country's queen in 1548 to save the king and country from invaders from Myanmar (Burma), the Singapore Straits Times reported Friday. The $9-million production, the most expensive in the country's history, titled Suriyothai, the name of the queen, is directed by Prince Chatrichaiera Yukol and was funded by Queen Sirikit's charitable foundation. The marketing campaign includes advertisements on beer cans, telephone cards and packets of tissue paper, the Straits Times said. Suriyothai is set to have a command performance before Thailand's king and queen on Sunday before being released on Friday.
