Zero Dark Thirty kills off U.S. box office competition

Jessica Chastain's new film, about America's decade-long manhunt for terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, earned five Oscar nominations on Thursday (10Jan13), leading moviegoers to turn out in droves to see the awards season favourite.

Horror comedy A Haunted House came in second with $18.8 million (£11.8 million) in ticket sales, while Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's Gangster Squad debuted in third with takings of $16.7 million (£10.4 million).

Quentin Tarantino's controversial Django Unchained ($11.1 million/£6.9 million) and Les Miserables ($10.1 million/£6.3 million) rounded out the top five, in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
