Rapper Ll Cool J is unfazed by the backlash sparked by his controversial Brad Paisley duet Accidental Racist, insisting the song was meant to "shake things up". The duo set tongues wagging on Monday (08Apr13) after releasing the track, about modern-day racial tensions in the U.S., with critics accusing the stars of trivialising the legacy of slavery. Now LL Cool J has spoken out to defend the song, telling CNN he is pleased the track has fans talking. He says, "Music is about... connecting different people and building bridges and breaking the rules. If it's not compelling, and it's not complex and it's not interesting, then what are we doing it for? So I think that's the right move. I needed to do something that was going to be interesting like that, and shake things up, and jump out of the box. I'm really proud of it, and I hope the world hears it and enjoys it." The hip-hop star also heaped praise on his collaborator for daring to tackle such sensitive matter, telling Parade magazine, "Brad's not afraid to express himself. What other country artist, or any artist right now, talks about slavery?"
