Tom Cruise's Oblivion blasts to top of U.K. box office

Tom Cruise's new sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion has vanquished The Croods to land the number one spot at the U.K. box office. The futuristic action film, starring Cruise as a mechanic living on a desolate Earth after an alien invasion, pulled in $8 million (£5 million) in its first weekend of release, pushing caveman cartoon The Croods into second place. The animated DreamWorks movie, about a prehistoric family, had weekend takings of $3.2 million (£2 million), bringing its total U.K. haul to $36.3 million (£22.7 million). Scary Movie 5, starring Ashley Tisdale, debuted at three with $1.8 million (£1.1 million) while Ryan Gosling's The Place Beyond the Pines, another new entry, brought in $1.1 million (£671,119) in fourth place. GI Joe: Retaliation ($840,374/£525,234) rounded out the top five.
