Veteran British actor Bill Roache has been arrested on suspicion of rape. The Coronation Street star, 81, who has played Ken Barlow in the U.K. soap opera since 1960, was detained by police at his home in Cheshire, England on Wednesday (01May13) on suspicion of assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Lancashire, England between April and July 1967. A spokesman for Lancashire Police says, "An 81-year-old man from Wilmslow in Cheshire has this morning, Wednesday May 1 2013, been arrested by Lancashire Constabulary on suspicion of rape. "The man will be interviewed at a police station in Lancashire during the course of the day. We take all allegations of sexual abuse extremely seriously." A spokeswoman for ITV, the broadcaster behind Coronation Street, says of the development, "Given that a police investigation is underway, it would not be appropriate for us to comment." As WENN went to press, it had not been confirmed whether Roache's arrest was part of Operation Yewtree, a police probe launched following claims late TV star Jimmy Savile abused hundreds of youngsters throughout his long-running entertainment career. Roache was recently forced to issue a public apology after he gave a bizarre interview on New Zealand TV in which he suggested victims of sexual abuse are paying the price for actions in their "previous lives".
