Star Trek veteran George Takei has asked for the public's help in identifying a group of men who allegedly attacked a gay couple in New York City earlier this week (begs06May13). Nick Porto and his partner Kevin Atkins were jumped on Tuesday (07May13) outside Manhattan's Madison Square Garden after attending a New York Knicks basketball game, leaving one with a broken nose and the other with a sprained wrist. The incident is being investigated by police as a homophobic attack and gay icon Takei has taken to his Facebook.com page to detail his outrage. He writes, "This violence happened just blocks from where I'm in rehearsal in Midtown NYC for (Broadway musical) Allegiance. Shame on the perpetrators, and on the bystanders who did nothing but take photos...This is just proof that the fight for equality is far from over. This happened in Midtown, during the day, with a ton of people around... When are we safe?" Takei has since uploaded surveillance footage of the eight men wanted for questioning and has urged his followers to contact the authorities if they have any information about the beating. He adds, "Thanks in part to social media, the police in NYC have released a video of men whom they are looking to speak with in connection with the attack on a gay couple near Madison Square Garden... I'm sharing this video hoping someone can help with identification. Let's help solve this together, friends."
