Angelina Jolie impressed her doctor with her remarkable recovery after returning to work just days after undergoing a double mastectomy. The movie beauty went public with her health news in Tuesday's (14May13) edition of the New York Times, revealing she underwent the preventative surgery at Los Angeles' Pink Lotus Breast Center in February (13) in a bid to keep cancer at bay. She had reconstructive surgery immediately after the mastectomy, and spent time recuperating at her Hollywood home, where Dr. Kristi Funk stopped by to check up on her recovery process. Funk has now opened up about her famous patient's treatment and recovery in a lengthy blog post on the medical centre's website, and she admits she was pleasantly surprised by Jolie's determination to bounce back from the operation. The doctor writes, "To a large extent, I believe recovery reflects expectation. On day four after her mastectomies, I was pleased to find her not only in good spirits with bountiful energy, but with two walls in her house covered with freshly assembled storyboards for the next project she is directing." Dr. Funk has also praised Jolie's fiance, Brad Pitt, for his unwavering support, adding, "Her partner was on hand to greet her as soon as she came around from the anesthetic, as he was during each of the operations." Jolie opted to have the surgery and reconstruction after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation, which doctors estimated gave her an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died in 2007 at the age of 56 after battling ovarian cancer for almost a decade.
