Moody indie rockers The National have pulled out of an upcoming concert in Turkey as local protesters continue to clash with police. Just a day after Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds To Mars axed a 30 June (13) show in Istanbul due to the growing political unrest, The National have also decided to scrap their performance at the Istanbul Calling festival on 23 June (13). A message on their Facebook.com page reads: "We're sad to report that our Istanbul show has been cancelled. We support the right to peaceful protest and hope that excessive violence by riot police ends quickly." Istanbul's Taksim Square has become the site of bloody clashes between authorities and thousands of political activists expressing their growing dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government. The civil unrest initially began last week (begs03Jun13) after cops tried to forcibly move activists demonstrating against plans to redevelop the historic square.
