Beauty queen Shanna Moakler leads new anti-fur initiative

Jun 13, 2013 | 1:38pm EDT

Former Miss USA Shanna Moakler is spearheading a new anti-fur campaign to coincide with this year's (13) pageant. The reality TV star and ex-wife of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has teamed up with three other pageant winners - Shandi Finnessey, Susie Castillo and Alyssa Campanella - to bare all for a new PETA press ad, linked to the animal rights group's I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur billboard campaign. The quartet of beauties have also filmed a video urging pageant contestants to refuse the fur coats they're offered as gifts. In the film, Castillo says, "I've been an animal lover all my life, and the more I learned of the torture that animals go through in the name of fashion, I just think it's so unnecessary... It's unbelievable to me. "I feel blessed to take a stand united and to tell the pageant industry not to support the fur industry." In addition to starring in the ad, Finnessey has sent a letter to lawmakers in her home state of Missouri, urging them to adopt a no-fur policy. Meanwhile, in a statement to PETA bosses, Moakler writes, "As long as I'm the director of Miss Nevada, we will never award fur coats as prizes, and I urge my fellow pageant directors to make the same pledge. Kind people today are taking a stand against cruelty to animals, so a fur coat is no prize for a compassionate, socially-aware woman." The Miss USA 2013 pageant will take place this weekend (16Jun13) in Las Vegas.
