Veteran British actress Anna Wing has died at the age of 98. Wing passed away on Sunday (07Jul13), according to her agent, but no further details about her death were available as WENN went to press. Born in Hackney, London in 1914, Wing enjoyed a long and varied career in TV with screen credits including Doctor Who, The Bill and Silent Witness, but she is best known for her portrayal of matriarchal Lou Beale in long-running British soap EastEnders. In 2009, at the age of 94, Wing was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her long-running career, which spanned more than six decades of television, film, radio and theatre, as well as her services to charity. Wing's longtime EastEnders co-star June Brown, who still appears in the BBC soap opera, has paid tribute to her late friend, stating, "She was a very generous woman in many ways and an excellent actress who made a script her own, lifting the character off the page and making it quite different from what you'd have expected. "I always enjoyed her company... I was very fond of her indeed and will remember Anna with great affection always." A spokesperson for the show says, "We are deeply saddened to hear that Anna Wing has passed away. From the very first episode of EastEnders, Anna created one of the most iconic matriarchs in television history. Anna will be remembered fondly by everyone at EastEnders and our deepest sympathies are extended to her family and friends." A number of other EastEnders stars, including Adam Woodyatt, who plays her onscreen grandson Ian Beale, and Patsy Palmer, have also offered tributes to Wing, along with executives at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
