Violinist at Bolshoi Theatre dies after stage fall

Jul 17, 2013 | 1:41pm EDT

A senior violinist at Russia's Bolshoi Theatre has died after falling into the orchestra pit below the stage on Tuesday (16Jul13). Viktor Sedov was transported to a local medical centre for treatment, but on Wednesday (17Jul13) he succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The 65 year old had been a member of the Moscow opera house for four decades and a spokesperson for the company, Katerina Novikova, insists the musician's "sense of humour and extraordinary erudition" will be greatly missed. This is the latest tragedy to hit the Bolshoi Theatre - the ballet company's artistic director, Sergei Filin, lost his eye sight earlier this year (13) after he was involved in a violent acid attack. Soloist Pavel Dmitrichenko and two alleged accomplices have since been charged in connection with the incident.
