Icelandic singer Bjork joined the ranks of celebrities speaking out against the controversial verdict in the Trayvon Martin case by dedicating a protest song to the slain teen. Neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter charges on Saturday (13Jul13) after he shot dead unarmed youth Martin in Florida last year (12). The acquittal sparked a furious response from a number of outraged celebrities, and now kooky pop star Bjork has added her voice to the protests by dedicating her controversial song Declare Independence to Martin during a show in Canada. The star closed the concert in Toronto on Tuesday (16Jul13) with the protest anthem, leaving the stage to chants of "Justice!" and "Raise your flag", according to the Toronto Star. Bjork has previously performed the song as a protest in countries such as China, and she also dedicated it to jailed Russian punk stars Pussy Riot last year (12). Other artists to have dedicated songs to Martin in the aftermath of the verdict include Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z, while Stevie Wonder has vowed not to perform in Florida again until the law is changed.
