Varg Vikernes released after arrest

Jul 19, 2013 | 6:23am EDT

Rocker Varg Vikernes has been released from jail following his arrest on Tuesday (16Jul13). Officers from France's Central Directorate of Internal Intelligence agency swooped on the Burzum member's home in Salon-la-Tour following reports he was plotting a massacre. The investigation was launched after Vikernes' French wife legally bought four rifles. Authorities feared the pair was planning to carry out a terrorist attack similar to that of Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik, who allegedly sent a book on his ideologies to Vikernes before killing 77 people in 2011. The property was searched for weapons as Vikernes was taken into custody along with his wife, but the pair was subsequently released on Thursday (18Jul13) after officials found no evidence of a terrorist attack plot. He has been charged with inciting racial hatred over alleged online comments he made against Muslims and Jews and will appear in a French court in the coming weeks. Vikernes was released from prison in 2009 after spending 16 years behind bars for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Oystein Aarseth, and has since been convicted of three counts of arson.
