Rocker Pj Harvey has offered her support to a fellow Brit detained at the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba in the form of a new song. The singer/songwriter released Shaker Aamer, which she dedicated to the hunger striker, on Saturday (03Aug13). The 46 year old has been held at the U.S. prison for more than 11 years without being charged or tried. He was cleared for release in 2007 following several requests to return him to the U.K. from British government officials, but he remains behind bars at Guantanamo. Aamer's supporters fear he will not be allowed to return to England, where his wife and children live, after his repatriation is finally agreed - and he'll be sent to his birthplace of Saudi Arabia. Following Harvey's new release, she posted a message from Aamer's lawyer on her website, which read, "We hope that people listen to this song and think about Shaker Aamer’s plight: detained for eleven long years at Guantanamo, without charge or trial - despite having been cleared for release by both Bush and Obama. "The UK Government must do everything it can to bring Shaker back home to his wife and kids in London, where he belongs. PJ Harvey has written a wonderful song - I know Shaker will be deeply moved by it - and I only hope that, with the support of the public, he will one day be able to listen to it in freedom."
