Former pop star Eydie Gorme has died, aged 84. The singer passed on Saturday (10Aug13) in Las Vegas with her husband and musical collaborator, Steve Lawrence, by her side. No cause of death has been made public, but reports suggest she had been battling cancer. A statement from Lawrence reads, "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time." Gorme started her career working as an interpreter for the United Nations, but made her recording debut in 1950 with the Tommy Tucker Orchestra, and her big break came when she was hired as a regular on The Tonight Show, singing duets with her husband-to-be Lawrence. She married Lawrence in 1957 and they worked as a musical duo, Steve and Eydie, but her biggest hit was a solo effort, 1963's Grammy-nominated track Blame It on the Bossa Nova. Gorme won several Grammy Awards during her career, both for her solo work and for her recordings with her husband, and the stars later became regulars on the nightclub circuit, while they also appeared together on Broadway in a musical called Golden Rainbow. They continued touring into the 2000s before Gorme retired in 2009. Among their many accolades, the couple was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She is survived by Lawrence and their son, David. Their other son, Michael, died in 1986 aged 23 from an undiagnosed heart condition. A number of stars have paid tribute to Gorme since news of her death broke, including veteran crooner Tony Bennett, who took to his Twitter.com page to write, "America has lost a great vocalist. RIP Eydie Gorme." Actor/musician Steve Martin also expressed his sadness on the social networking website, and songwriter Diane Warren added, "Las Vegas please dim your lights tonite (sic) for Eydie Gorme. RIP."
