Bob Newhart enjoyed low-key celebration after first Emmys win

Sep 16, 2013 | 11:14pm EDT

Veteran actor Bob Newhart celebrated his first Emmys win with a beer and a slice of pizza with his wife. The 84 year old has previously been nominated for five Emmy Awards, but never walked away with a statuette - until the Creative Art Emmy Awards on Sunday (15Sep13). He was nominated for his guest appearance on comedy The Big Bang Theory, and finally took home the prize 51 years after his first ever nomination. But Newhart kept his win low-key, and headed out for a simple snack with his wife, Ginnie. He tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I'm amazed all the attention this is getting. (After the ceremony) My wife and I didn't have any real plans. We went to the afterparty because we were both hungry. She and I we went to the Bel-Air hotel and we each had a beer and piece of pizza." Newhart admits he was blown away by the reception he received from his peers at the prizegiving: "It suddenly dawned on me that I'm going to have one of those. Then I looked and saw the audience and they were standing up. That really got to me. When you see 6,000 people and they're standing up because they like your work... I kind of lost it then. The standing ovation really was the wild moment."
