James Mcavoy has detailed the horrifying extent of the injuries he suffered playing Macbeth onstage, revealing he broke a thumb, incurred an axe wound, and had stitches in his head from a machete slash. The Wanted star played William Shakespeare's tragic king in a London theatre production of the famed story earlier this year (13) and he later told how he was undergoing physiotherapy sessions to cope. McAvoy was frequently left battered and bruised by the physically demanding role, but now he has revealed he endured several painful visits to hospital for treatment to his injuries. The actor tells The Observer Magazine, "I've broken my thumb. I got hit by somebody's axe. I got stitches in my eye 'cause (sic) somebody hit me with their machete. So I was ready to finish physically, but I am kinda (sic) bereft, really... I've done long runs before, but it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the physical way that we approached the play. So I wasn't doing any DIY and I wasn't playing football at the weekend any more - I couldn't, I was just too sore."
