U.S. reality TV regular Dr. Drew Pinsky has stunned fans by revealing he spent his summer (13) undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. The Celebrity Rehab specialist has opened up about his secret diagnosis and treatment in an essay for HLNTV.com in a bid to raise awareness about the disease, which he has lived with since 2011. In the article, Pinsky claims he initially put off his wife's pleas to have a check-up after falling ill "here and there", because he was convinced he would know if something was seriously wrong thanks to his own medical background. He eventually relented and underwent a series of tests and scans, but he still refused to make a fuss of his health results, despite having a family history of prostate cancer, which pinpointed some anomalies but didn't highlight anything too alarming. However, when his own doctor suggested surgery was a necessary course of action months later, Pinsky agreed and he went under the knife just before America's Independence Day celebrations on 4 July (13). He writes, "While many of you were celebrating the Fourth of July, I was at home on my couch recovering from a radical robotic prostatectomy. Four hours of surgery had left me in great pain, without an appetite, and in need of help from my college-age son, Jordan, to get up and lie down. But I was cancer-free for the first time in at least two years."
