Russian punk star's health is fine, say medics

Sep 30, 2013 | 6:16am EDT

Jailed Pussy Riot star Nadezhda Tolokonnikova is in a "satisfactory" condition following her hospitalisation in the midst of a hunger strike. The punk activist, who is serving a two-year sentence in Mordovia, Russia for hooliganism, was transferred to a prison medical wing on Friday (27Sep13), five days after she began refusing all food in protest against the living conditions behind bars. Now a jail spokesman has revealed Tolokonnikova was moved to a hospital wing for "screening" and doctors have since confirmed her health is not in danger. The official says the musician was transferred to a medical unit "for further screening of her health dynamics". Tolokonnikova and two Pussy Riot bandmates - Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich - were jailed for two years last year (12) over their controversial protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin at a church in Moscow. Samutsevich was freed in October (12) when her sentence was commuted, and Tolokonnikova and Alekhina are due to be released in March (14).
