A top Russian religious leader has joined concerned parents in calling for a boycott of Sir Elton John's upcoming concerts in the country. Imam Seidzhagfar Lutfullin has called on Muslims to stay away from Elton's gigs in Kazan and Moscow in December (13), insisting the Rocket Man is "promoting sodomy". His comments, made to the media on Thursday (03Oct13), come just days after officials at the Ural Parents Committee urged President Vladimir Putin to axe the two upcoming shows over fears the openly-gay rocker will violate a nationwide ban on "homosexual propaganda". Lutfullin called Sir Elton "a world-famous homosexual", and added the hitmaker is "the devil's work in the shape of a pederast (a man who has sex with boys)". He stated, "Sodomy... is what the world-famous homosexual Elton John, who recently wed a man in public, is promoting." Elton, who is actually engaged to wed his longtime partner David Furnish, has insisted he will defend gay rights on tour in Russia, even though he could face a 15-day prison sentence and fines if he breaks new anti-gay tolerance laws introduced to prevent the promotion of homosexuality to children. Last month (Sep13), Elton announced he would be ignoring calls for him to boycott Russia as a protest over the country's new legislation - because he owed it to fans to perform. He said, "As a gay man, I can't leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don't know what's going to happen, but I've got to go." John will perform in Moscow on 6 December (13) and in Kazan the following day.
