Character actor Ed Lauter has died from cancer at the age of 74. The actor passed away on Wednesday (16Oct13) at his home in West Hollywood, California after battling mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Lauter, whose career in Hollywood spanned over four decades, appeared in dozens of films, including his role as Peppy's butler in The Artist and, most notably, as Burt Reynolds' nemesis in 1974's The Longest Yard. Lauter also had many U.S. TV credits to his name, including recurring roles on B.J. and the Bear, How the West Was Won, ER, Psych and most recently, Shameless.
