A remake of the highly successful U.S. TV miniseries Roots is in development at America's History Channel network. TV executives have acquired the rights to Alex Haley's 1976 book, Roots: The Saga of an American Family, which inspired the epic 1977 series, starring LeVar Burton as slave Kunta Kinte. Roots collected nine Emmy Awards and 37 nominations, as well as a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award. It spawned two sequels and the finale is still the third-highest-rated U.S. TV programme ever. Mark Wolper, the son of the late Roots executive producer David L. Wolper, is on board for the remake.
