Andy Kaufman's brother fears he has been the victim of an elaborate hoax after welcoming the woman he believed was his sibling's daughter onstage at a tribute to the late comedian. Michael Kaufman introduced a 23 year old woman, believed to be actress Alexandra Tatarsky, during a speech at the annual Andy Kaufman Awards in New York on Monday (11Nov13), and revealed he had been led to believe she was his late brother's daughter. He also suggested that she is living proof that his brother may well be alive. The Taxi star lost his battle with lung cancer, aged 35, in 1984, but fans have long speculated that his death was a hoax. Overwhelmed by the media interest in the story, Michael Kaufman cancelled an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday (14Nov13), but agreed to talk to CNN in a bid to clear up reports suggesting he had hired Tatarsky for the stunt. He told The Lead host Jake Tapper that he believes he is the victim of a hoax created to trick him into believing that his brother is still alive. He said, "I believe I am part of the hoax... I don't believe that she is acting on her own, though." When cancelling his scheduled chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Kaufman told the publication he had been "misquoted" in the media and insisted he never fully believed that his brother was still alive.
