Hundreds of mourners turned out to pay their last respects to celebrated British composer Sir John Tavener at his funeral in Winchester, England on Thursday (28Nov13). The musician passed away on 12 November (13) at the age of 69, and he was remembered during a memorial service at Winchester Cathedral. The 700-strong congregation included Tavener's widow and three children, as well as a representative for Charles, Prince of Wales, and the service featured several of the composer's own works, including Angels and Mother of God, Here I Stand. During the service, the Very Reverend James Atwell, Dean of Winchester, said of Tavener, "We are gathered to commend to God someone who opened a door to heaven for so many people by his music with its transparently spiritual quality." Tavener was signed to The Beatles' Apple record label in the 1960s and he was nominated for Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize twice - in 1992 and 1997.
